In the wake of her father’s death, Sam (Danielle De Vries) is drowning in grief and insomnia. A single online call with the eccentrically unhelpful psychiatrist Dr. Whimsey (Nicole Bröhl) leads to a prescription for benzodiazepines, launching a swift and devastating descent into dependency. As the pills take hold, Sam’s world shrinks to the four walls of her flat, and her most vital relationships begin to fracture under the strain.
Orbiting her collapse are her best friends: Jenna (Rianne Snape), a copywriter numbing her disillusionment in a dead-end affair, and Nick (Alec Osborne), Jenna’s stepbrother and Sam’s ex, whose presence fuels a simmering, toxic dynamic. Guiding—or derailing—Sam’s journey is Darren (Edd Pullen), a Deliveroo driver turned dealer whose unexpected wisdom offers a flicker of light in the darkness, and Demi (Elinor Sumption), Sam’s eco-warrior mother, too focused on the world’s end to see her daughter’s private apocalypse.
Reimagining the Persephone myth, KORE is a fiercely modern tale that blends gritty realism with haunting, physical-theatre depictions of the underworld of addiction. Set to a live original score by Chloe Mason, this raw, actor-driven collaboration confronts the chaos of coping—whether through pills, protest, or painfully dark comedy.
★★★½ – “A compelling look at the silent epidemic of benzodiazepine dependence.” – ReviewsHub
“KORE succeeds in shining a light on the darker side of prescription medication and the devastating effects it can have… Danielle De Vries’s writing delves into what it’s like to live in a modern world and the significance of being seen. The play points to the way drug use becomes less a cause than a symptom, a misguided remedy for alienation and invisibility.”
“Performances are strong across the cast… The standout is Edd Pullen as Darren, the delivery driver drug dealer. His presence brings a refreshing groundedness as he delivers both narcotics and uncomfortable truths, his humour and unexpected warmth highlight an alternative to the despair enveloping the other characters.”
“While its characters may not always be easy to connect with, the production leaves an impression of quiet unease and a reminder of how dependence can take root in ordinary lives.”
★★★★ – “Humorous & Poignant” – Christine Stanton, Rated Reviewed
“Danielle De Vries ensures a well measured balance between comedy and poignancy within the script… Her depiction of addiction and withdrawal is done well, with frequent sequences of movement to further explore the internal struggle.”
“Darren the Deliveroo drug dealer (Edd Pullen) is the unexpected gem of a character… the fantastically funny backbone that holds the comedic side of the script together. His light-hearted, flippant attitude, and surprisingly touching words of advice are delivered well…”
“An interesting, enjoyable show, that is peppered with humorous moments within the otherwise emotive storyline, bought to life by a talented cast.”
